Larry's Biography

Larry Fitzgerald is a Twin Cities sports media giant. For 25   years he has presented the world of sports as a writer, pro­ducer, talk-show host and commentator. Larry has been the Sports Editor and Columnist for the Minnesota Spokesman Recorder, one of the Midwest’s strongest and oldest African American news journals, for the past 20 years.

 Larry first graced the airwaves in 1979 on KMOJ-FM the Twin Cities pre­miere African American com­munity‑based radio station.  His broadcasting work has gone through many incarnations, with shows such as Higher  Ground, Sports Beat, Inside the NFL - Monday Morning Football Show  and currently Fitz Beat. Sports Beat (1985‑1991) was a daily sports radio show that he cultivated to success and eventu­ally syndicated and sold to ESPN.

 Larry Fitzgerald has lent his talent for exceptional sports reporting to such entities as Almanac, an award‑winning news magazine show which airs on

KTCA Channel 2; On the Line, On the Fan, a show he co‑hosted with Eric Nelson on all‑sports radio station KFAN 1130 AM; and regular features on KCCO AM 950. Larry has also collabo­rated with former Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Dennis Green; he not only produced and co‑hosted the show Vikings Beat, he also produced The Dennis Green Show, both of which could be heard nationwide.

 Larry’s illustrious career also includes hosting a Minnesota Timberwolves' post-game show aired live from the Target Center in Minneapolis. The show featured NBA stars and coaches throughout the league.

 Larry attributes much of his success and inspiration to Carol, his wife of 24 years, who sadly succumbed to breast cancer in April 2003. He is the proud par­ent of sons Larry Jr. (20) Marcus (18), who are well on their way to making sports histo­ry of their own.  Larry Jr. is a soph­omore at the University of Pittsburgh major­ing in Early Education.  He was voted the 2002 Big East Conference Rookie of the Year and is an All‑American wide receiver. His youngest son Marcus is a graduating senior of the Class of 2003 from the Academy of Holy Angels and is all‑time leading rusher in that school's history. He is also the proud recipient of a scholarship to Marshall University in West Virginia.

 In February 2003, Larry Fitzgerald was honored with the 2003 Heritage Award presented by the Minnesota State Baptist Convention for outstanding community service in the field of sports coverage.

 Larry Fitzgerald's "Fitz Beat" sports column is featured every week in the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder. 

He also can be heard every Monday during NFL season hosting the  "The Daunte Culpepper Show” from 9:00am to 9:30 am every Monday morning and "Vikings Beat" follows 9:30am to 10:00am on KMOJ and daily on KMOJ’s “Adult Mix Morning Show” at 8:20 am. January through August Larry interviews the biggest names in sports on The Larry Fitzgerald show Monday Mornings 9-10 AM.
